Remote Portraits
I have always been slightly jealous of painters – Francis Bacon for example – in their practice of painting either from memory or from a photograph. Either way, the person (the sitter) was not present in front of the artist while making the work.
In the early 2000s, I explored the process of filming a person and then photographing the TV during playback a day or two later with varying results. During Covid I revisited the practice but this time live over Zoom. I am energised by this way of working because it is a contrast to the traditional photographer and sitter meeting face-to-face. I keep exploring.
